Ukrainian servicemen with amputations to climb Everest for the first time: raise funds for their comrades

07.05.2025

Ivan Tarn, a soldier of the DIU’s Artan special forces unit, and Oleksandr Dashko, a veteran of the KRAKEN unit, became the first ever Ukrainian servicemen with amputations to climb Everest.

Their ascent is part of the Limitless project, which aims to prove that even after severe injuries, active life does not end.

We are not broken. And we want the world to see it. Every step we take is not only a climb up the mountain, it is the rise of Ukraine in front of the world, – says Ivan Tarn.

The main goal of the expedition is to raise UAH 3 million for equipment to overcome phantom pain in Ukrainian soldiers who have lost limbs. The project is being implemented in partnership with the UNBROKEN Ukraine rehabilitation center.

Ivan Tarn is also an ambassador for The Ukrainian Review, an English-language analytical publication that works in two areas: countering disinformation and analyzing events related to Ukraine or important events in the world.

The soldier was seriously injured in Bakhmut while evacuating a fellow soldier. Despite his injury, he said in an interview that he plans to return to service.

After rehabilitation, I will remain in the service. I will make every effort to get back on my feet as before, but let’s be realistic: I am unlikely to be able to fully participate in the war as before. At least not as actively. I hope to find a job either at the headquarters or as an instructor. I’m sure I can still be useful, – said Ivan Tarn.
