President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticized the proposal to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian war put forward by Brazil and China. In his opinion, the Brazilian government is pro-Russian.
He said this in an interview with the Brazilian newspaper Metrópoles, Hromadske reports.
Zelenskyy recalled a meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and hoped that “he understood me”. According to the Ukrainian president, he wanted to see in the actions of his Brazilian counterpart “an understanding of what is happening, not just political reconciliation”.
What does it mean to ‘just sit down and talk’? […] You can’t say [that] we just have to take steps towards each other. What do you mean ‘towards each other’? He (Vladimir Putin – ed.) came in, killed people, seized territories, and now Lula says ‘let them talk, – Zelenskyy said.
In addition, the President of Ukraine also believes that the Brazilian-Chinese proposal to resolve the war in Ukraine is a destructive political statement that did not consult with Kyiv. According to him, he suggested that the Brazilian president and the Chinese side work together on a peace plan. Nevertheless, he believes that Brazil has coordinated its plan with Russia.
We are not stupid. What is this theater for? So you talked to Russia about an initiative, put it forward and say: “Let’s do this initiative”. This is definitely not about justice, not about values, definitely not about respect for Ukraine, for the territorial integrity that both China and Brazil talk about so much, – the Ukrainian president said.
As a reminder, on May 23, the governments of Brazil and China signed an agreement to resolve the war between Russia and Ukraine, advocating political negotiations to achieve peace. The countries also asked for the support of the international community.
In their plan, China and Brazil proposed not expanding the area of hostilities, preventing escalation, and “not escalating the situation by any party”.
Subsequently, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that its joint plan with Brazil had been approved by more than 110 countries.
