Hungary is planning to open the first school for Ukrainian-speaking children, as the arrival of a large number of refugees from Ukraine has created a need for their education.

This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is on a visit to Kyiv, Suspilne reports.

We discussed the opening of a Ukrainian school in Hungary, the first such school, and Mr. Prime Minister assured me of his support for this project, – the president said.

In turn, Orbán confirmed that the Ukrainian authorities had raised the issue of a Ukrainian school and assured that he fully supported this initiative.

He also emphasized that Hungary understands the need to establish a school with Ukrainian as the language of instruction, as many Ukrainian refugees have arrived in the country.

Ukrainians have been in Hungary before, but now there are a number of additional needs, and we have to take care of these people. I was very happy to hear the president’s initiative to open a Ukrainian school in Hungary. We do not just understand this need. The Hungarian state will finance this school. We will open as many Ukrainian schools as needed. It is important for us that Ukrainians feel at home in Hungary, – Orbán said.

He noted that he expects Ukraine to understand the needs of the Hungarian-speaking minority living in Zakarpattia.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán arrived in Kyiv on the morning of July 2.
