Zaluzhnyi on US ground operation in Iran: military catastrophe

A potential US ground invasion of Iran would result in a military disaster for American forces. Modern battlefield technologies and attrition strategies make the presence of ground troops in such zones nearly impossible.

This was reported by Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UK and former Commander-in-Chief of the AFU, in an article for The Telegraph. Zaluzhnyi identified several parallels between the full-scale war in Ukraine and the escalating conflict in the Middle East. He argued that shifts in combat paradigms have neutralized the traditional advantages of larger military powers. Ukraine’s resistance proves that smaller nations can successfully counter major aggressors using asymmetric capabilities.

“The speed of past wars in this region has given rise to many fantasies. The massive changes on the battlefields of the Russian-Ukrainian war have altered the paradigm of warfare. Consequently, they have changed the very essence of the combat capabilities of those who would like to test them,” Zaluzhnyi wrote.

The “Kill Zone” Concept

Experience in Ukraine shows the effectiveness of the “kill zone” concept, where drones exercise total control over territory. If US forces attempt a landing, Iran will likely employ a similar strategy of attrition. Under such conditions, deploying soldiers into the strike zone becomes a fatal strategic error.

“It is very dangerous if one of the parties tries to test how the ‘destruction zone’ works in desert terrain. It will be a disaster,” the General emphasized.

Zaluzhnyi noted that only three countries currently possess the physical capacity to wage this type of modern war: Ukraine, Russia, and Iran. He highlighted that political will and technological adaptation allow these nations to maintain combat capabilities that exceed their economic or demographic resources.

The warning comes as the US and Iran exchange threats following Donald Trump’s ultimatum regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Observers note that the US is urgently deploying warships with thousands of marines to the Persian Gulf. This buildup fuels fears of a potential ground offensive order.

Previously, The Ukrainian Review reported that the Trump administration had initiated preliminary discussions regarding peace talks with Tehran after three weeks of regional warfare.
