US Navy begins blockade of Strait of Hormuz following Trump order

12.04.2026

The United States has initiated a full naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz to stop Iranian maritime extortion. President Donald Trump ordered the US Navy to intercept any civilian vessels that previously paid passage fees to Tehran. Consequently, this strategic move aims to clear Iranian naval mines and restore international law in the Persian Gulf region.

Donald Trump reported this decision on his Truth Social account following the failure of diplomatic efforts.

He stated that the best navy in the world will now prevent any ships from entering or leaving the waterway. According to the President, several allied nations will join the United States in this enforcement operation. The blockade serves as a direct response to six weeks of Iranian interference with global shipping routes.

Security of international waters

The US administration intends to stop Tehran from profiting from what they describe as “global extortion.” Therefore, the naval mission includes detecting and detaining vessels in international waters that comply with Iran’s illegal demands. Trump emphasized that safe passage in the open sea is only guaranteed for those who follow international maritime regulations.

“Immediately, starting as of this moment, the United States Navy, the finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKING any vessels trying to enter, or exit, the Strait of Hormuz. … Other nations will be participating in this Blockade. I have also instructed our Navy to identify and detain every vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran. No one paying an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas,” Trump stated.

The closure of the Strait has already triggered global economic instability. The US government maintains that clearing mines is a priority before reopening the artery to all commercial traffic. Furthermore, military officials warned that any Iranian attacks on peaceful vessels or US forces would face immediate and severe consequences.

Previously, The Ukrainian Review reported that US–Iran talks ended without result. The negotiations in Pakistan collapsed specifically over the issue of nuclear weapons.
