Ukraine receives ammunition for which Slovaks raised money

08.10.2024

Ukraine has received six trucks of ammunition that Slovaks were raising money for, despite the position of their government. This collection has become the most successful in the history of Slovakia – in three weeks, people have donated more than €4 million, Babel reports.

According to the Noviny portal, the money was raised as part of a Czech initiative to purchase ammunition. It involved 70,000 Slovak citizens. The collection began after the Slovak government announced that it would not join the Czech initiative.

We have donated more per capita than Canada, Iceland or Slovenia, – said Fedor Blaschak, the initiator of the fundraiser.

So far, €4 million of the money raised has already been spent on the ammunition Ukraine has received. There is still €500 thousand to go. This money will be invested in a new contract for the purchase of grenades for grenade launchers.

In February 2024, the Czech president announced that his country, in cooperation with Canada and Denmark, had found 500,000 155mm ammunition and 300,000 122mm shells that could be delivered within a few weeks if the necessary funds were available. As the Financial Times noted, Prague planned to raise $1.5 billion to pay for the ammunition and asked its allies to join in.
