Ukraine will not extend gas transit from Russia, despite Fico’s efforts

The agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine will not be extended, despite Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s efforts to convince the Ukrainian government to do otherwise, Hromadske reports.

This was stated by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during a joint press conference with his Slovak counterpart.

He said that imposing sanctions on Russian gas and depriving Russia of the opportunity to finance the war with it is “Ukraine’s strategic goal”.

We call on all European countries to completely abandon oil and gas from Russia, – Shmyhal said.

According to Shmyhal, Ukraine also understands the “acute dependence” of some countries, including Slovakia, on Russian resources.

At the same time, Ukraine hopes to supply gas to Europe from other sources and is ready to fulfill its international obligations, in particular under the Association Agreement with the EU and the Energy Charter Treaty.

Before the meeting between the heads of the Ukrainian and Slovak governments, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that he would persuade Ukraine to maintain the transit of Russian oil and gas to Europe through its territory.
