Ukraine has already fulfilled all previously unfulfilled steps – European Commission

30.10.2024

The European Commission’s updated report on enlargement has shown that Ukraine has already fulfilled all the previously unfulfilled steps set out in the European Commission’s conclusion of 2022.

This was reported by Radio Svoboda with reference to an unpublished document prepared by the EU executive body.

Ukraine continued to promote integrity and merit in the judiciary, as well as to strengthen the anti-corruption institutional framework and increase the results of high-level enforcement in corruption cases, the report says.

The report also positively noted Ukraine’s efforts regarding the rights of national minorities, which were emphasized by Hungary, among others.

At the same time, the report concludes that despite progress in fundamental reforms, “further efforts are needed.”

Ukraine should continue to focus on further building a strong law enforcement record in high-level corruption cases… and strengthen the fight against organized crime, the document recommends.

The European Commission also emphasized the need to improve public administration and decentralization reforms.

As noted, the screening of Ukrainian legislation for compliance with the European one is “progressing smoothly”. The European Commission has noted Ukraine’s ratification of the Rome Statute and emphasizes the need to bring national legislation into line.

If Ukraine fulfills all the conditions, the Commission looks forward to opening negotiations on clusters, starting with the basics, as soon as possible in 2025, the publication quotes the document as saying.

The EU executive body regularly informs on the status of negotiations with candidates for membership, including Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Turkey and the Western Balkans.
