Trillions in Losses: Russian Oil Facilities Under Drone Attacks

09.02.2026

The Russian oil and gas industry lost over 1 trillion rubles by the end of 2025. Systematic Ukrainian drone attacks on refineries caused direct infrastructure destruction and massive profit losses. Constant strikes turned the Russian energy sector into a critical risk zone for insurers. These actions significantly weakened the financial foundation of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Russian media report this citing data from insurance broker Mains and Kommersant. Direct industry losses from UAV strikes have already exceeded 100 billion rubles. However, the total damage including indirect costs and lost revenue reached a record high. Russian companies now spend enormous sums on facility insurance and emergency repairs. Systematic strikes force the aggressor to divert resources from the frontline to protect industrial hubs.

Impact on Production

According to Bloomberg, Ukraine carried out 120 attacks on Russian oil facilities during 2025. Refineries faced the most pressure with 81 recorded hits. December became a record month with 24 separate attacks on energy infrastructure. Due to constant shelling, oil supplies to Russian refineries dropped to a 15-year low. Total oil processing in Russia decreased by 1.7% to 262.3 million tons over the year.

Beyond refineries, Ukrainian forces targeted maritime infrastructure, pipelines, and tankers. Specifically, gas fields and sea terminals faced 27 attacks. The situation worsens for Russia because many defense enterprises still lack international sanctions. This allows the aggressor to obtain some technologies through third countries. However, the frequency of Ukrainian strikes currently outpaces the speed of Russian repair works. The energy sector remains the most vulnerable part of the Russian economy during the full-scale war.

Previously, The Ukrainian Review reported that Indian oil refineries gradually move away from Russian oil.
