The Russian cargo vessel Ursa Major, which sank off the coast of Spain in late 2024, may have become the target of a deliberate attack because it was allegedly transporting nuclear reactor components intended for North Korea. One version of the investigation suggests that a Barracuda-type torpedo may have struck the ship.

CNN reported the new details, citing investigation materials and testimony from the vessel’s captain, Igor Anisimov.
Details
According to journalists, Ursa Major carried components for two nuclear reactors. The shipment may have been intended for North Korean submarines. The vessel was traveling through the Mediterranean Sea after departing from the Russian port of Ust-Luga.
During questioning, the ship’s captain, Igor Anisimov, confirmed that reactor components were on board, although he claimed they did not contain nuclear fuel.
CNN investigators claim that Western countries may have conducted a “dangerous special operation” to prevent the transfer of nuclear technology to North Korea. Spanish investigation materials mention a hole in the hull measuring approximately 50 by 50 centimeters. Investigators believe a Barracuda supercavitating torpedo may have caused the damage.
Before sinking, the vessel suddenly slowed down. The following day, several explosions occurred near the engine room. Two crew members disappeared during the incident. The ship later issued a distress signal and sank.
At the same time, some experts believe a magnetic mine attached to the hull may have caused the explosions instead. Spanish authorities and the Pentagon have not officially commented on claims about possible Western involvement.
After the sinking, observers recorded unusual activity near the crash site. American WC-135R aircraft, which detect nuclear materials, flew over the area twice. The Russian vessel Ivan Gren also operated nearby, followed later by the ship Yantar, which Western countries associate with Russian intelligence operations.
The wreckage of Ursa Major currently lies at a depth of about 2.5 kilometers, and investigators still cannot access the ship’s black box.
Context
The incident took place amid growing ties between Russia and North Korea. After the meeting between Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin, North Korea began supplying Russia with ammunition and sending military personnel to support the war against Ukraine.
Earlier, The Ukrainian Review reported that Putin had expressed readiness to meet Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a third country.
