After Three-Day “Truce,” Russia Resumes Massive Drone Attacks

During the night of May 12, Russian forces launched a large-scale drone attack against Ukraine. Explosions were reported in Kyiv and the surrounding region, as well as in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Chernihiv, and Zhytomyr regions. In total, Russia launched more than 200 drones.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the attack. The information was also confirmed by the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the State Emergency Service (Kyiv, Kharkiv, Chernihiv regions), local OSA (Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr regions), and city mayors (Kyiv, Kharkiv).

According to Zelenskyy, Russia “chose on its own to end the partial silence” that had lasted for several days. He stressed that Ukraine would respond “symmetrically” to Russia’s actions and called on Moscow to move toward a real ceasefire.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russian forces launched 216 attack drones overnight. Ukrainian air defence units neutralized 192 of them.

Kyiv and Kyiv region

In the capital, debris from a drone fell onto the roof of a 16-storey residential building in the Obolon district, causing a fire. Preliminary reports said no casualties were recorded.

In Kyiv region, the Fastiv district came under attack. A kindergarten caught fire after the strike. Russian forces also damaged a residential building and several private households. Officials reported no deaths or injuries.

Dnipropetrovsk region

In Dnipro, a 33-year-old man suffered injuries during the overnight attack. Air defence forces shot down nine Russian drones over the region.

Later in the morning, Russian forces attacked railway infrastructure facilities. A train driver sustained injuries while heading to a shelter.

Kharkiv region

Russian drones struck an enterprise in the settlement of Velykyi Burluk in Kupiansk district. The attack set a bus and a truck on fire. Russian forces also struck a private household in the village of Bezruky.

Kharkiv itself also came under attack. On the evening of May 11, a Russian drone hit the roof of a residential building. One person required medical assistance due to an acute stress reaction.

Kherson and Chernihiv regions

In Kherson, a 68-year-old woman suffered injuries. In Chernihiv region, drones attacked Novhorod-Siverskyi and Koriukivka districts, causing fires.

Zhytomyr region

In Zhytomyr and the surrounding region, Russian attacks damaged residential and utility buildings, as well as vehicles belonging to local residents.

Context

Ukraine and Russia, with US mediation, had agreed to a three-day truce from May 9 to May 11. The agreement included a partial ceasefire and a prisoner exchange.
