The growing popularity of far-right parties in Romania, such as the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and SOS Romania, has raised concerns ahead of the presidential and parliamentary elections held on November 24 and December 1, respectively, according to The Ukrainian Review.
Recent polls indicate that AUR could secure up to 20% of parliamentary seats. This political force has repeatedly voiced territorial claims against Ukraine, criticized its diplomatic position, and advocated for reducing aid to Kyiv.
These parties [the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and SOS Romania – ed.] together could have about 20%, or possibly even more, in the next parliament. Thus, even if they remain isolated, their influence will be significantly greater than before. The new coalition will need to steadfastly defend its policies, including its stance on Ukraine, to ensure it is not undermined by the far-right’s higher score, – noted Sergiu Mișcoiu in a comment to The Ukrainian Review.
Another prominent player, SOS Romania, has adopted similar rhetoric, appealing to voters dissatisfied with the war’s impact on the country’s domestic policies.
Despite this, the majority of Romanians continue to support Ukraine, and the current government remains actively engaged with Kyiv. A notable example is Romania’s recent transfer of Patriot systems to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense. However, experts warn that the rising influence of far-right parties could complicate decision-making regarding military, economic, and diplomatic support.
