The Swiss government has taken further steps to support the 14th package of EU sanctions against Russia, the country’s Federal Council announced on August 21, Radiosvoboda reports.

The Federal Council has decided to adopt further measures of the 14th package of EU sanctions against Russia. They include clarification of the bans on Russian diamonds, which makes them internationally consistent, – the statement said.

The press service of the German government also pointed out the importance of effective implementation of sanctions against Russia.

In addition, the Federal Council has extended the deadline for issuing permits for the withdrawal of investments from Russia. This is done so that Swiss companies can legally cease their operations in Russia.

The changes are expected to come into force on August 27.

On July 9, the Swiss government expanded the sanctions lists against Russia. Then the Swiss Federal Department of Economics, Education and Research imposed sanctions on another 69 individuals and 86 legal entities.

On June 24, the European Union approved the 14th package of sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine. The sanctions apply to 116 individuals and companies, and a ban is imposed on the transit of Russian liquefied natural gas through European ports. The EU will continue to purchase such gas from Russia, but will ban its re-export. The EU has also imposed restrictions on the “shadow” Russian fleet, with 27 ships being sanctioned. They were banned from entering European ports and EU companies were banned from providing services to them.
