Putin accuses Ukraine of trying to attack Kursk NPP

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the Ukrainian military of attempting to strike the Kursk nuclear power plant on the night of August 22, Hromadske reports.

Putin said this at a meeting with the governors of Russia’s regions bordering Ukraine. Putin “expressed hope that the IAEA would send experts to assess the situation at the plant”.

Meanwhile, the head of the Kursk region, Alexei Smirnov, said at the meeting that the situation at the Kursk NPP is calm and everything is working as usual.

Earlier, it became known that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi plans to visit the Kursk NPP in the coming days and then meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.

Grossi says that the IAEA is “extremely concerned” about the fighting near the Kursk nuclear power plant. According to him, the outdated Soviet reactors do not have the necessary protection. Earlier, he called on the parties to “maximum restraint” and assured that the IAEA was “monitoring the situation”.
