Rutte: NATO Ends Dependence on US and Delays Ukraine’s Accession

09.04.2026

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the Alliance’s transition toward equal partnership while acknowledging that Ukraine’s membership remains unlikely in the near future. During his speech in Washington, he emphasized that Europe is increasing defense spending and assuming greater responsibility for its security.

Bloomberg reported this following the Secretary General’s address at the Ronald Reagan Institute. Rutte noted that Donald Trump’s criticism pushed European nations to revise their defense budgets. He described the previous state of relations as an “unhealthy codependence” where the continent relied too heavily on American military strength. According to the Secretary General, current investments by allies are building the foundation for a true partnership.

Ukraine’s NATO Prospects

Rutte addressed Ukraine’s membership, describing the situation as difficult due to a lack of political consensus. Clash Report reported this today.

“I don’t think the issue of Ukraine’s NATO membership can be resolved in the short term. I don’t think it will happen politically anytime soon — that is my fair assessment,” Mark Rutte stated.

He explained that several key nations currently oppose inviting Ukraine to join. Among them, he listed Germany, Slovakia, Hungary, and the United States. Rutte emphasized that this matter is not presently on the table for immediate resolution.

Strait of Hormuz and Regional Stability

The Secretary General also urged Europeans to take more decisive actions in the Middle East. Following the end of the war in Iran, vital maritime routes remain effectively closed. Rutte stressed that allies must ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz, even during the current 14-day truce. He concluded that the Transatlantic Alliance is undergoing a period of profound change, and there is no turning back from this new path.

Previously, The Ukrainian Review reported that Europe questions Mark Rutte’s strategy toward Trump.
