European allies increasingly voice concern about NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s approach to US President Donald Trump amid the war in the Middle East and broader instability within the Alliance.

Bloomberg reports this, citing European officials and diplomats.

Europe uneasy with support for US actions against Iran

After the United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran, several European countries urged Rutte to take a more cautious tone. Sources say many European capitals do not share his public support for Washington’s actions, as they see this as “not their war.”

Rutte’s statements drew particular criticism when he appeared to endorse US decisions. Most allies, by contrast, feared escalation and economic fallout.

Bloomberg notes that Rutte chose a direct and informal communication style with Trump. He often contacts him personally and publicly echoes his positions.

This approach has given Rutte privileged access to the US president and allowed him to influence certain decisions, including NATO funding and sensitive issues such as Greenland.

However, some European officials warn that this strategy carries risks. At times, Rutte appears to side with Trump even on issues where Europe holds a different position.

Tensions rise within NATO over US policy

Sources say Trump’s broader policy complicates the situation. He has reduced support for Ukraine, triggered economic concerns linked to the Iran conflict, and made sharp statements about the Alliance itself.

The US president has repeatedly questioned NATO’s value and even threatened to withdraw from it.

Against this backdrop, Rutte is preparing for new talks at the White House, where he will try to ease tensions and persuade the United States to maintain cooperation with its allies.

Context

Tensions within NATO intensified after the United States and Israel launched their war against Iran in late February. Some Alliance members refused to support the operation militarily, including efforts to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier, The Ukrainian Review reported that French President Emmanuel Macron criticized Donald Trump’s strategy during his visit to Seoul. The French leader called for stability in international relations and consistency within the Alliance.
