NATO Deploys Troops to Greenland Amid Trump Remarks

16.01.2026

European NATO countries are deploying military forces to Greenland amid rising security concerns and public statements by US President Donald Trump about his intention to establish control over the autonomous Danish territory. According to Euronews, the deployment is a reconnaissance mission aimed at assessing security risks related to Russian and Chinese activity in the region.

The deployment began on the same day that talks between representatives of the US, Denmark, and Greenland in Washington ended without an agreement. Meanwhile, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said there are “fundamental disagreements” with the United States and noted that American control over the island is not necessary.

Who is Sending Troops to Greenland

France, Sweden, Germany, and Norway announced their participation in the mission. Germany’s Bundeswehr sent 13 soldiers to the Greenlandic capital Nuuk for a reconnaissance visit at Denmark’s invitation. The German Ministry of Defence said the mission’s purpose is to explore ways to ensure security in the Arctic, considering Russian and Chinese activities.

In addition, the Netherlands and Estonia are also taking part. Tallinn said it is ready to deploy troops if requested by allies. French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the contingent would be reinforced with land, air, and naval forces. Furthermore, Greenland’s Deputy Prime Minister Mute Egede confirmed that NATO will conduct flights and ship movements in the coming days, formally as part of exercises.

US Factor after Venezuela

Trump intensified his comments about Greenland after a US operation in Venezuela led to the detention of Nicolás Maduro by American authorities. On January 11, speaking to journalists on Air Force One, Trump said the United States is considering buying the island rather than leasing it. He also suggested that Russia or China could gain control if the US does not act.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the situation “momentous” and stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty of a NATO ally. European Commissioner for Defence Andrus Ansip said that a potential US takeover of Greenland could affect the structure and future of the Alliance.

Conclusion

The NATO mission in Greenland involves preventive reconnaissance and exercises in a strategically sensitive region. Overall, such measures aim to prevent scenarios similar to those that preceded Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. They also highlight the importance of allied coordination and collective defence.
