Kupyansk: The Armed Forces of Ukraine Push Back Occupiers

15.12.2025

Last week, the situation in the city of Kupyansk and the surrounding area demonstrated notable changes in favor of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Ukrainian troops liberated several key settlements and advanced on the approaches to the city, which is of vital strategic importance for controlling logistics along the Oskil River. Kupyansk has repeatedly been at the center of military clashes, and it is here that the tension between the The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and the Russian occupying forces has particularly escalated. This week, local AFU units forced the enemy to withdraw from some positions and achieved a blockade in certain sectors. Amid the escalating confrontation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy paid a visit to Kupyansk to support the troops and emphasize the importance of this section of the front for future negotiations and the country’s defense.

Activation of the Ukrainian Counteroffensive

Over the past seven days, Ukrainian defense forces have achieved tactical success in areas north and northwest of Kupyansk. The AFU liberated positions of former enemy checkpoints, as well as individual villages and strategic approaches to the city, including Kindrashivka and Radkivka, which significantly complicated the logistics of Russian units.

Ukrainian troops also conducted an operation to blockade separate Russian force groupings in the northwestern outskirts of Kupyansk, cutting them off from main supply lines. This created favorable conditions for the further clearing of territories where the occupiers were located just a week ago.

According to the latest data, journalist and serviceman of the “Khartia” Brigade Yuriy Butusov stated that the Ukrainian Defense Forces have established full control over the Yuvileinyi microdistrict in the southwest of Kupyansk. In his assessment, the loss of this area significantly complicates the Russian troops’ ability to hold the remaining positions in the southern part of the city. At the same time, according to analysts, geolocated materials published on December 12–13 indicate the presence of separate Russian sabotage groups in the northern and western districts of Kupyansk.

Such actions not only strengthened the tactical positions of the AFU but also demonstrated the ability of the Ukrainian command to effectively coordinate units for advancement, despite constant fire pressure from the enemy.

The State of Russian Forces

The position of Russian units in Kupyansk remains difficult. The occupiers are suffering losses, experiencing problems with logistics and defense due to the loss of control over the approaches to the city, as well as numerous AFU attacks that prevent the stabilization of the front. The Russian side has repeatedly made statements about supposedly “full control” over the city, but these claims are refuted by facts on the battlefield and confirmations from Ukrainian intelligence about active counterattacks.

The occupiers still hold separate blocks in the central part of Kupyansk, but their forces are partially isolated and limited in their ability to maneuver further. They are forced to conduct defensive combat under constant shelling and a shortage of supplies, which significantly reduces their combat effectiveness and morale.

President Zelenskyy’s Visit

An important event was the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Kupyansk on December 12, where he personally met with Ukrainian fighters involved in combat operations in this area. Zelenskyy greeted the servicemen, thanked each unit for their service, and emphasized the importance of front-line results as a factor for Ukraine’s success in diplomatic negotiations.

“Today is the Kupyansk direction, our warriors who are achieving results for Ukraine here. The Russians talked a lot about Kupyansk – we see. I was there, I greeted the guys. Thank you to every unit, everyone who fights here, everyone who destroys the occupier”, Zelenskyy noted.

He also stressed that strong positions on the battlefield strengthen Ukraine’s position at the negotiating table.

Such a visit not only boosted the morale of the military but also served as an important signal to both internal and international audiences that the Ukrainian command is controlling the situation and is not backing down from the challenges.

Conclusion

The situation in Kupyansk over the past week has shown that Ukrainian troops are capable not only of holding but also of expanding control over strategically important territories. The AFU liberated key approaches to the city, carried out a successful operation to blockade Russian forces, and continues to put pressure on the enemy. Russian units remain under fire influence, isolated, and forced to conduct defensive actions in restricted conditions. President Zelenskyy’s visit provided moral support to the defenders and was a clear signal that Ukraine holds the initiative in this direction. Despite the difficult situation, the results of the past few days give reason to believe that Kupyansk and its surroundings are gradually returning to full Ukrainian control, which is important for both the country’s military and diplomatic strategy.
