The Helsinki Commission insists that the United States should abandon the Cold War status quo in relations with Russia and call Moscow a permanent threat to global security, Babel reports.
This is stated in a new report by the Helsinki Commission, which was obtained by The Hill before publication.
The report also argues that Washington should reconsider its thinking towards Russia. As it has done with China over the past few years, and allocate resources accordingly.
The priority of the report’s strategy is to ensure Ukraine’s victory in the war against Russia, calling for “massive” military and humanitarian aid to Kyiv and allowing the Ukrainian Armed Forces to strike deep into Russia with US-provided weapons.
The Hill notes that the report’s recommendations go beyond the policies of the Joe Biden administration. The recommendations also contradict the position of presidential candidate Donald Trump and his supporters in Congress, who advocate for reducing European security spending and direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
Joe Wilson, the Republican chairman of the Helsinki Commission, rejected the possibility of successful negotiations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
There is no doubt in my mind that Donald Trump will see the insincerity of the war criminal Putin. Putin is not a man with whom you can reach an agreement that is substantial and lasting,” he said.
The U.S. Helsinki Commission, also known as the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, is an independent U.S. government agency established by Congress in 1975 to monitor and promote compliance with the Helsinki Accords and other commitments of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
