EU ministers to discuss lifting restrictions on Ukraine’s strikes against Russia with Western weapons

29.08.2024

Before the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, EU High Representative for Security Policy Josep Borrell said he would raise with the ministers the need to lift restrictions on Ukraine’s use of Western weapons, Radiosvoboda reports.

The weapons we provide to Ukraine must be used in full, and restrictions must be lifted so that Ukrainians can aim at the places where Russia is firing, otherwise these weapons are useless, – Borrell said before the meeting, speaking to the press together with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

At the same time, Kuleba emphasized that it was about strikes against “legitimate targets”, and Borrell reminded that during the full-scale invasion, Russia had attacked Ukraine with 14,000 drones, almost 10,000 missiles, and many guided bombs, mostly launched from Russian territory.

At the meeting, EU foreign ministers are also expected to discuss delays in arms deliveries. The Ukrainian minister said that some of the Patriot air defense systems promised in April have not yet been delivered, and the EU High Representative promised to take up the issue, because “it is very easy to promise, but it is another thing to deliver”.

On August 30, EU defense ministers will also meet in Brussels, and the Ukrainian issue is on the top of the agenda. The day before, the NATO-Ukraine Council at the ambassadorial level was held at NATO headquarters.
