Kuleba: Ukraine’s main problem in the war is partners’ fear of escalation

29.08.2024

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Ukraine’s biggest problem in the war with Russia is that Kyiv’s allies are afraid to approve a new policy of support for Ukraine, afraid of escalation, Suspilne reports.

He said this at a joint press conference with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski in Poland, where Kuleba arrived on an official visit on August 28. The official was quoted by both Reuters and Polish TVN24.

If the fear of escalation had not been the main factor influencing the decision of the allies, Ukraine would be in a much better position now and would have received the necessary weapons much earlier, – the foreign minister said.

According to the minister, from the very beginning of the large-scale Russian invasion, the biggest issue Ukraine has faced is the dominance of the concept of escalation in decision-making among Kyiv’s international partners.

Most of our partners are afraid to discuss the future of Russia… This is very upsetting, because if we do not talk about the future of the source of the threat, we cannot build a strategy, – added Kuleba.

Ukraine’s foreign minister also assured that Russia has a clear strategy and goal to destroy Ukraine.

Do not be afraid of Russia’s reaction, we are not afraid. We are not afraid of anything. Please help us. Give us what we need. We will win this war, and then we will read historical books about how we made decisions together, – he also said.

Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski, in turn, said that while Russia is using long-range weapons against Ukraine, the allies should “allow Ukraine to fight with what it has, what we have delivered to it –  let’s deliver it more”.
