Duda: Russia must compensate Ukraine for the damage caused by the war

03.09.2024

On the day of the outbreak of World War II, Polish President Andrzej Duda emphasized the importance of compensation by the aggressor for the damage caused by the war, mentioning Ukraine in this context.

This was reported by Ukrinform.

Duda reminded that during the war, Poland suffered huge material and human losses that were not compensated. According to Polish experts, the country’s material losses as a result of German aggression exceed $1.5 trillion. More than 70% of this amount is compensation for human losses, as the country lost 5 million people during the war.

Duda emphasized that Germany has repeatedly apologized for the wrongs done to Poland, and “in the Christian dimension, the Poles have forgiven the Germans.”

But, in addition to this, there is still material damage. And regardless of whether we accept (the apology – ed.) and forgive, we deserve compensation for the losses, for what was irrevocably destroyed, – the president emphasized.

In his opinion, this case today has an international dimension in the context of the future prosecution of Russia for the damage caused to Ukraine.

We would not want Ukraine to have to rebuild at its own expense, as Poland has been doing for 40 years. Ukraine will need support, but first of all, it will demand compensation and reimbursement for the damage caused, which is the absolute duty of the aggressor, i.e. Russia, – Duda emphasized.

On September 1, 1939, the German Luftwaffe dropped 380 bombs on the city of Wieluń, almost completely destroying the small town. The attack killed about 2,000 local residents. It was the first bombing of Poland by German troops at the beginning of World War II.
