Ukraine is prepared to discuss realistic compromises to end the full-scale war while excluding any concessions regarding its independence or sovereignty. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the “stand where we stand” principle is already a significant compromise since Russia occupies nearly 20% of Ukrainian territory.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported this during an interview with the Japanese news agency Kyodo News. He emphasized that Ukraine is willing to negotiate with the United States but refuses to accept repeated ultimatums from the aggressor state. According to the president, many countries in Asia and the Middle East that acted as mediators now clearly recognize Russia as the aggressor.
“We are ready for real compromises. But not for compromises at the cost of our independence and sovereignty. We are ready to talk about compromises with the United States. But not to receive ultimatums from the Russians over and over again. They are the aggressor. Everyone has recognized this. This has not changed,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
The president explained that Moscow’s current proposals do not constitute genuine negotiations. Instead, the Russian side continues to use the language of terror, demanding total surrender in exchange for stopping the killing of civilians.
Defense Cooperation with Japan
Ukraine also proposes a new level of security partnership with Japan. Kyiv is ready to share unique technologies, specifically the experience with naval drones. These systems allowed Ukraine to neutralize part of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea despite not having its own traditional navy.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy expressed interest in joint production of air defense systems and missile technologies. He officially invited the Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, to visit Ukraine to discuss bilateral projects and economic cooperation.
“We would be very happy to see Prime Minister Takaichi in Ukraine. I think it would be very important for our two countries. I am ready to meet in any format, on any platform, or during any major meetings or summits. But I think it would be more useful to meet directly and focus on our bilateral relations. We will be very happy to have her. And I am also ready to come to Japan,” Zelenskyy added.
Earlier, The Ukrainian Review reported on Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s interview regarding the national defense strategy.
