NATO leaders, who have gathered in Washington for a historic summit, intend to consider ways to strengthen support for Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression, Radiosvoboda reports.
On July 10, NATO leaders will discuss Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s proposal to provide Ukraine with 40 billion euros ($43 billion) in military aid for the next year.
In his opening remarks at the July 9 summit, marking NATO’s 75th anniversary, Biden said Russia seeks “nothing less” than to “wipe Ukraine off the map”, but he insisted that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not win.
Ukraine can and will stop Putin, especially with our full collective support. They have our full support, – Biden said, announcing the West’s transfer of additional Patriot missile systems and interceptors to Ukraine.
According to Biden, the United States and partners intend to provide Ukraine with dozens of additional air defense systems in the coming months.
He also added that Ukraine will receive hundreds of NASAMS interceptors over the next year.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said late on July 9 that Kyiv expects “strong decisions” from the United States.
Also on July 9, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that in the coming days the alliance would announce the creation of a new NATO military command in Germany, headed by a three-star general. He will coordinate the training and equipment of Ukrainian troops. The Alliance will also send a senior NATO representative to Kyiv.
The summit itself takes place against the backdrop of political uncertainty in the United States and Russia’s intensified bombing of Ukraine.
