US to announce $2.3 billion in security assistance to Ukraine soon

United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said on Tuesday, July 2, that the United States will soon announce an additional $2.3 billion in security assistance to Ukraine, including anti-tank weapons, interceptors and ammunition for Patriot and other air defense systems.

This is reported by the AP, Suspilne informs.

According to the agency, this became known during a meeting between Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and Austin at the Pentagon.

I am proud that the United States will soon announce new security assistance to Ukraine worth more than $2.3 billion. This package, in line with the President’s arms reduction order, will provide more air defense interceptors, anti-tank weapons, and other critical munitions from U.S. arsenals, – Austin said.

According to the US Secretary of Defense, this will also allow the United States to purchase more Patriot and NASAMS air defense interceptors, which will be provided on an accelerated basis by changing the sequence of deliveries under certain foreign military contracts.

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in an interview at the Brookings Institution that the United States is working to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense. According to him, new announcements in this regard should be expected in the near future, probably before the NATO summit next week.

Also on July 2, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met at the Pentagon to discuss strengthening the partnership and the security situation.
