US announces $425 million military aid package for Ukraine

On October 16, United States President Joe Biden announced a new military aid package to Ukraine worth $425 million, Suspilne reports.

This was reported on the White House website.

It is noted that the aid package includes additional air defense capabilities, air-to-ground munitions, armored vehicles, and critical ammunition to meet Ukraine’s immediate needs.”

In the coming months, the United States will provide Ukraine with additional weapons, including hundreds of air defense interceptors, dozens of tactical air defense systems, additional artillery systems, significant amounts of ammunition, hundreds of armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles, and thousands of additional armored vehicles to help equip the Ukrainian Armed Forces, –  the White House said.

The aid package includes:

  • additional ammunition for NASAMS air defense systems;
  • RIM-7 missiles and air defense support;
  • Stinger anti-aircraft missiles;
  • ammunition for HIMARS;
  • air-to-ground ammunition;
  • artillery ammunition of 155 mm and 105 mm caliber;
  • TOW missiles;
  • Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems;
  • HMMWV armored vehicles;
  • small arms and ammunition;
  • grenades, thermal agents and training equipment;
  • demolition equipment and ammunition;
  • spare parts, support equipment, services, training, and transportation.

The White House added that during the phone call, President Zelenskyy informed Biden of the plan to defeat Russia. Both leaders instructed their teams to hold further consultations on the next steps.

The two presidents also agreed to work with international partners to intensify military aid planning to ensure that Ukraine has the equipment it needs to win. The Ramstein meeting will be held online in November.

As part of this effort, in November 2024, President Biden will host a virtual meeting at the level of the leaders of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, where leaders will coordinate with international partners to provide additional assistance to Ukraine, – the White House said.

After a phone conversation with Joe Biden, President Zelensky thanked the United States for the assistance package.

I am grateful to President Biden, both parties of Congress and the American people for the $425 million defense package announced today, which includes new air defense systems and long-range weapons, –  Zelenskyy said.

He added that he had suggested that Biden consider the possibility of developing joint weapons production. The two leaders also discussed the importance of additional training for the Ukrainian military.
