Ukrainian forces appear to be present in areas up to 35 kilometers in the Kursk region of Russia from the international border with Sumy Oblast, Hromadske reports.

This was reported by the “Institute for the Study of War” (ISW), citing geolocation footage and statements by Russian “military officers.”

According to ISW, Ukrainian forces continued to advance rapidly into the Kursk region on August 8 and are present in areas up to 35 kilometers from the border. However, they do not control the entire area.

Russia’s military “correspondents” claimed that small Ukrainian armored groups were moving further into the Russian rear and bypassing Russian fortifications before engaging in combat. In particular, it was claimed that units from Chechnya defending the border in Kursk region failed to prevent the advance of the Ukrainian army, as the Ukrainian military passed by Chechen strongholds.

The Telegram channel Astra wrote that on the night of August 9, a military convoy of the Russian Armed Forces was defeated near the village of Oktyabrske in the Rylsky district of Kursk region. There was no official confirmation of this information.

According to analysts, Ukrainian forces may use these small armored groups to conduct assaults across the contact line due to the low density of Russian forces in the border areas of Kursk region. In addition, the Russians claim that Ukrainian forces have successfully used certain innovative tactics and technological capabilities during operations in the Kursk region.
