Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry announces a demarche against Mongolia due to Putin’s visit

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has announced a demarche to Mongolia over Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the country.

This is stated in a statement by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Babel reports.

Putin arrived in Mongolia on September 2. It was his first visit to a member state of the International Criminal Court after the issuance of an arrest warrant, but Mongolia did not arrest him – as it later explained, allegedly because of “energy dependence on Russia”.

Ukraine “conveyed its deep disappointment” to the Mongolian side during a meeting with Director General of the Mongolian Foreign Ministry’s Europe and Africa Department Ganhuurai Battungalag, who arrived in Kyiv from Ulaanbaatar at the request of the Ukrainian side.

Ukraine will not leave such actions without a proper response. This will be taken into account in further policy on the development of bilateral relations with Mongolia and in developing Ukraine’s position on support in international formats, – the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.

At the same time, Ukraine hopes that Mongolia will take “effective steps” to restore the constructive nature of Ukrainian-Mongolian relations.

As a reminder, in March 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin and the Russian Children’s Ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova. They are suspected of illegally deporting Ukrainian children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia, which is a war crime. As official suspects, Putin and Lvova-Belova should be arrested in countries that have ratified the Rome Statute. In law, 123 countries are closed to them, including Mongolia, which ratified it in 2002.
