Ukraine to discuss Volyn tragedy with Poland – Sybiha

02.10.2024

Ukraine is ready to discuss controversial issues of common history with its Polish colleagues. Poland wants to raise the issue of exhumations of Polish victims of the Volyn tragedy, Suspilne reports.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Sybiha Andrii spoke about the discussion of this issue, answering questions from Radio Svoboda on the sidelines of the Warsaw Security Forum.

We have enough political will and diplomatic talent to solve any issue, including the most difficult ones, including with our closest allies and friends, the Poles. We will talk about this topic today, – Sybiha replied. But he did not specify with whom he would discuss this topic.

On October 1, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported that the Ukrainian minister met with Polish President Andrzej Duda in a one-on-one format.

Earlier, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz  told Polsat News that Ukraine would not join the EU without resolving the Volyn tragedy. According to him, realpolitik requires “giving an ultimatum”.

Andrzej Duda also commented on the Deputy Prime Minister’s statement and said that “it is also in Ukraine’s interest to reach an agreement on all complex issues, including historical ones”. He added that “Ukrainians have a lot of problems with their past” from World War II. In addition, Duda said that Putin attacked Ukraine to stop its integration into the EU, and whoever blocks this issue is in line with the Kremlin’s policy.
