President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting on the situation in the Kursk region. They discussed key issues such as security, humanitarian aid, and the establishment of military commandant’s offices if necessary, Babel reports.

Ukraine is protecting itself and the lives of its people in the border communities and is taking active steps on Russian territory. Our forces strictly comply with the requirements of international conventions and international humanitarian law, – Zelenskyy emphasized.

Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said that for self-defense, the Ukrainian military formed a buffer zone in the Kursk region. Ukraine plans to open humanitarian corridors there to evacuate civilians, allow representatives of the UN and the Red Cross to enter, and establish food and medicine supplies.

The creation of a buffer zone in the Kursk region is a step to protect Ukraine’s border communities from daily Russian shelling, said Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. Due to the constant shelling, the population of 183 settlements in 15 territorial communities of Sumy region is subject to priority evacuation. More than 20,000 people have already been evacuated, including almost 2,500 children.
