Ukraine and the US to sign security agreement on June 13 — Sullivan

The White House has confirmed that the United States and Ukraine will sign a bilateral security agreement on Thursday, June 13.

This was stated by US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan at a briefing on board the presidential plane on the way to Italy, reports Suspilne.

“I am pleased to announce that our negotiations with Ukraine have concluded, and we will sign the agreements tomorrow”, — he said.

According to Sullivan, the US and Ukrainian presidents will hold talks on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Italy and sign an agreement that “makes clear that our support will be long-term and guarantees our cooperation, particularly in the areas of defense and security.”

Earlier, CNN cited sources as saying that the US and Ukraine may conclude a security agreement and officially present it at the Group of Seven summit in Italy.

According to the sources, this agreement will oblige the United States to continue training the Ukrainian armed forces for 10 years, expand cooperation in the production of weapons and military equipment, continue to provide military assistance and increase intelligence sharing.

The United States also promises to hold consultations with Ukraine immediately after a future attack by Russia to determine the next steps.

However, the agreement with the US will not contain a mutual defense clause that would oblige the US to defend Ukraine militarily in the event of another attack.

The security agreement between the US and Ukraine, according to CNN sources, will not contain specific monetary commitments to support Ukraine’s defense.

However, an appendix to the agreement will outline how the Joe Biden administration plans to work with the U.S. Congress to fulfill security commitments, including long-term funding to support Ukraine’s defense.

The sources also noted that the US-Ukraine security treaty will be a so-called executive agreement, which does not require ratification and is “not binding on any future president”.
