G7 summit in Italy: Zelenskyy announces security agreements with the US and Japan

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he expects important decisions from the Group of Seven summit that begins in Italy on June 13 and will focus on Ukraine, its defense and economic stability, reports Radiosvoboda.

Zelenskyy noted that he would hold a number of bilateral meetings and sign security agreements with the United States and Japan during the summit.

“Today, I will attend the G7 meeting and hold a number of bilateral meetings. I will meet with the Summit’s host, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, as well as Canadian and UK Prime Ministers Justin Trudeau and Rishi Sunak, European Council President Charles Michel, and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Bilateral security agreements will be signed during meetings with US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The document with the United States will be unprecedented, as it should be for leaders who support Ukraine”, — Zelenskyy wrote in a telegram.

The main topics of the summit for Ukraine, according to the president, will be the development of a coalition of fighter jets, accelerated training of pilots, accelerated delivery of aircraft, development of the Ukrainian air defense system based on “the most powerful Western complexes” and building up long-range capabilities, approval of the format for using Russian assets for the benefit of Ukraine, in particular for the development of the Ukrainian defense industry, and joint weapons production.

The Group of Seven (G7) summit in the Italian region of Puglia will last until June 15.

As reported by the EU Council, the meeting will include six working sessions on the following issues:

  • Africa, climate change and development;
  • the current situation in the Middle East;
  • Russian aggression against Ukraine;
  • Migration;
  • Indo-Pacific region / Economic security;
  • Artificial Intelligence and Energy / Africa and the Mediterranean Region.

“During the third session, the G7 leaders will reaffirm their military and financial support for Ukraine. The talks will also focus on frozen Russian assets, sanctions, accountability and Ukraine’s recovery”, — the announcement reads.

According to the summit’s schedule, the issue of the situation in Ukraine will be considered this afternoon.
