The U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) announced the operation.

Details

In its statement, SOUTHCOM described the mission as an example of cooperation among partners in Latin America and the Caribbean in the fight against drug cartels. General Donovan praised the courage and determination of Ecuadorian forces conducting operations on their own territory.

The Ecuador mission forms part of a broader U.S. strategy to counter narco-terrorism in the region. U.S. forces have previously carried out special operations in Venezuela, Mexico, and Colombia.

For example, on January 3, 2026, U.S. forces conducted an operation in Caracas that resulted in the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Maduro’s security personnel and Cuban intelligence officers died during the operation.

SOUTHCOM stressed that the mission aims to decisively confront drug cartels that sow terror, violence, and corruption among citizens in the region.

Context

Countering narco-terrorism in Latin America remains a key U.S. priority. Operations combine ground and air actions, targeted raids to detain key cartel figures, and close coordination with national military partners, as seen in Ecuador.

U.S. officials also emphasize the need to respond to threats “anywhere,” including in countries neighboring Iran and Venezuela.

On March 1, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump launched a large-scale military operation against Iran following sustained lobbying from key Middle Eastern allies. The strikes killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and dozens of senior officials.

Earlier, The Ukrainian Review reported that the United States is preparing the next phase of strikes against Iran, expected to intensify compared to previous operations. The Iran campaign also affects the Russia–Ukraine war.
