The Ukrainian Defense Forces are creating a “security zone” in Russia, which is adjacent to the territory of Ukraine, to protect the border regions of Ukraine, especially the border of Sumy region.

This was announced in a telegram by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories Iryna Vereshchuk, Radiosvoboda reports.

She noted that there are Russian civilians in this zone who are protected by international humanitarian law, which Ukraine fully complies with.

Therefore, according to her, the Ukrainian military is planning to:

  • Conduct humanitarian operations to support civilians within the zone;
  • opening of humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians: both towards Russia and Ukraine;
  • allowing international humanitarian organizations to enter the area for the purpose of humanitarian response and monitoring the humanitarian situation.

She said this after a meeting with the President of Ukraine on the situation in the Kursk region, during which, among other things, humanitarian aid was discussed. Vereshchuk, as can be seen in the video, participated in the meeting.
