The only thing worse than a monopoly is a private monopoly: obstacles to renewable energy

05.12.2024

Ukraine has significant potential for the development of renewable energy, but this sector faces numerous challenges, including regular missile attacks by Russia and financial difficulties that hinder its growth. This was reported by The Ukrainian Review, citing energy and corporate governance expert Dovydas Vitkauskas.

Ukraine needs more green energy, not because EU bureaucrats are asking for it, but because it is cheaper, more efficient, and can guarantee the country’s long-term energy independence, emphasized Dovydas Vitkauskas.

Currently, wind and solar energy production in Ukraine accounts for only 10% (10 TWh annually) of the country’s total electricity generation. According to the expert, the main obstacle is the monopolization of network access by private companies such as Oblenergo and DTEK.

The only thing worse than a monopoly is a private monopoly. Ukraine must make painful decisions to break the monopoly over grid access by enabling simpler, more transparent, less bureaucratic, and automated methods for thousands of large and small energy producers to connect, using the Nordic countries as an example, Vitkauskas noted.

The development of renewable energy is a strategically important step toward ensuring energy independence and long-term stability for the country.
