The International Criminal Court has been granted jurisdiction over the entire territory of Ukraine and has the right to investigate crimes committed by anyone, not just Russians, since 2015.
This was stated by the ICC spokesperson Fadi El Abdallah, answering questions from Ukrainian journalists, Babel reports.
We are talking about acts committed on the territory of Ukraine. It makes no difference who committed the crime. If you look at the statements of the previous prosecutor and the current prosecutor, they always mention all parties to the conflict, they send notices and warnings and guarantee that the law will be applied impartially, – the spokesman emphasized.
He was then asked how the court will consider the fact that Ukraine has ratified the Rome Statute, but with a provisional provision (Article 124), according to which the ICC will not have jurisdiction over war crimes against Ukrainian citizens for seven years.
The judges will decide when and if this issue is brought before them. Therefore, let me not speculate on this topic at this stage, – Fadi El Abdallah replied.
As a reminder, on August 24, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law ratifying the Rome Statute.
