The EU discloses details of the 14th package of sanctions against Russia

21.06.2024

The European Union has reached an agreement on the fourteenth package of sanctions against Russia. The restrictions include the military-industrial defense complex and financial services.

This was announced by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, on Platform X, Suspilne reports.

He named the sectors of the economy covered by the new package of sanctions against Russia, approved on June 20. It is aimed at:

  • The military-industrial defense complex;
  • Financial services;
  • Energy sector;
  • Sanctions circumvention;
  • War crimes, including those involved in the deportation of Ukrainian children.

These sanctions are aimed at making it more difficult for Putin’s government to wage an aggressive war, — the official wrote.

Reuters, citing diplomatic sources, also reported that the 14th package of sanctions provides for a ban on the re-export of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) in EU waters. At the same time, the sanctions do not restrict imports, as the 2022 block did for Russian offshore oil.

In total, 47 new legal entities and 69 individuals were added to the EU sanctions list, bringing the total number of sanctioned persons to 2,200.

On June 20, the ambassadors of the European Union agreed on the 14th package of sanctions against Russia in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Earlier, Reuters reported, citing European diplomatic sources, that after a month-long discussion, the EU countries failed to agree on the 14th package of sanctions against Russia because of Germany’s blocking of it. Berlin demanded to cancel a clause that expanded the list of goods that are prohibited from being sold to Russia by clients of EU companies in third countries. This clause was removed from the document.
