European Union ambassadors have agreed on the 14th package of sanctions against Russia in response to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
This was announced by the Belgian presidency of the Council of the European Union, Babel reports.
They called the new package “powerful and significant”.
“This package provides for new targeted measures and maximizes the impact of existing sanctions by closing loopholes,” – the statement said.
The restrictive measures of the 14th package should include a ban on the transshipment of Russian liquefied natural gas and measures to hold European operators accountable for violations of sanctions by their subsidiaries and partners in third countries.
“This tough package will further restrict Russia’s access to key technologies. It will deprive Russia of further energy revenues. And it will fight Putin’s shadow navy and shadow banking network abroad,” – commented European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Earlier, Reuters, citing interlocutors from European diplomatic circles, reported that the EU member states, after a month-long discussion, could not agree on the 14th package of sanctions against Russia because Germany blocked it. Berlin demanded the removal of a clause that expanded the list of goods that were to be banned from being sold to Russia by clients of EU companies in third countries. This clause was removed from the document.
In turn, Olaf Scholz denied that Germany had blocked the new package of European sanctions against Russia. According to him, the package is currently being discussed.
