The entire government of Japan headed by Fumio Kishida has resigned

01.10.2024

The Government of Japan, headed by Fumio Kishida, has resigned in full before the creation of a new cabinet, which will be formed by the next Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Suspilne reports.

This was reported by Japan’s public broadcaster.

The Kishida administration took over the leadership of the Cabinet in October 2021 and ended its term in about three years. Kishida will be replaced by the newly elected leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, 67-year-old Shigeru Ishiba.

Later, the parliament will convene an extraordinary session, during which Ishiba will be officially elected prime minister. This political force, together with its coalition partner, the Komeito party, has a majority in both houses of the legislature.

Today, it will also form a new cabinet. At the same time, the term of office of the current lower house of parliament expires in October 2025.

In the evening, Ishiba will hold a briefing following his appointment as prime minister and will outline his thoughts on issues such as the goals of the Cabinet and the future management of the government before holding his first cabinet meeting.

It is worth noting that Fumio Kishida was quick to join other G7 countries in sanctioning Russia and supporting Ukraine. He has repeatedly said that “today’s Ukraine may become tomorrow’s East Asia”, comparing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to China’s growing assertiveness in the Asia-Pacific region.
