Switzerland will host a conference on mine action in Ukraine (UMAC2024). The conference will be held on October 17-18 in Lausanne. This was reported by the Swiss Federal Council.
Since the beginning of the war in February 2022, Ukraine has become one of the most mined countries in the world. It is estimated that almost a quarter of its territory – an area three times the size of Switzerland – is contaminated with mines and other unexploded ordnance. Humanitarian demining is a priority for Switzerland, which has long been working at the diplomatic and humanitarian levels to contribute to the reconstruction of Ukraine, – the statement said.
The UMAC2024 Conference on Mine Action in Ukraine will bring together high-level representatives from governments, international organizations, the private sector and the scientific community.
Switzerland will be represented by President of the Swiss Confederation Viola Amherd, who will open the conference, and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.
The event, which Switzerland is organizing jointly with Ukraine, will focus on the global aspects of humanitarian demining, in particular on three pillars: people, partners and progress, – the statement said.
The goal of UMAC2024 is to put civilians at the center of the discussion, highlight the benefits of partnerships and show how innovations make mine action safer and more effective.
