The Swedish government has agreed to create a three-year military support program for Ukraine for the total sum of SEK 75 billion ($7.01 billion) for the years 2024-2026. From this amount, Sweden will allocate 25 billion Swedish crowns or 2.3 billion dollars each year, Babel reports.
This is stated in a message on the website of the Swedish government.
“Ukraine’s struggle against Russia’s war of aggression continues, and Sweden will support Ukraine’s struggle for as long as it takes”, — the message reads.
The release does not specify what exactly the allocated money will be used for. But it is noted that, taking into account this aid, the total military and civilian support of Ukraine from Sweden will amount to more than 100 billion Swedish kroner (more than 9.3 billion dollars).
“Military support within Ukraine can, for example, take the form of donations of defense equipment, financial contributions and financial support for the purchase of defense equipment”, — the government’s website states.
Separately, the release said that this program could burden Sweden’s state financing, so support to Ukraine will be carried out in such a way that the development of Sweden’s defense capabilities is not undermined, or that other necessary reforms are not displaced.
Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, Sweden has contributed the equivalent of SEK 37 billion to various efforts to support Ukraine. This was done with, for example, 15 military support packages totaling approximately SEK 30 billion. Currently, Ukraine is Sweden’s largest donor country.
