President of Finland calls for the start of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia

31.07.2024

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has said that the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia have “reached a point where they need to be started.”

He said this in an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, Suspilne reports.

We are now approaching the moment when negotiations should begin. The reality is that these negotiations should involve China, the countries of the global South, and Russia, – Stubb said.

The Finnish president also added that China has significant opportunities to contribute to ending the war. Stubb also noted that it is necessary to talk about conflict resolution, “not just pacification”.

He also noted that now “there is almost none of the desperation that we had in the spring” because of the US support for Ukraine. He also spoke about improvements in the delivery of equipment to Kyiv and the absence of a Russian breakthrough on the battlefield.

Russia, according to our information, is not advancing, and its losses are even greater than before. Putin thought that the West would get tired of the war. He thought he could wait for the American elections. But he was wrong, – Stubb added.

He said that the start of negotiations does not mean “making concessions,” but rather reaching a unified decision “on the territories”. Stubb also said that the negotiation process should take into account the “four elements of the peace formula.”
