Orbán: Trump’s victory will force Europe to reconsider its support for Ukraine

04.11.2024

Europe will have to reconsider its support for Ukraine if Donald Trump becomes president of the United States. The continent will not be able to bear the burden of war on its own, Suspilne reports.

This was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

According to Reuters, Orbán opposes military aid to Ukraine and has made it clear that Trump shares his views and will negotiate a peaceful settlement of the war. The Hungarian prime minister supports the Republican in the US presidential election.

We (in Europe – ed.) must realize that if America has a president who is in favor of peace, which I am not only sure of, but I interpret the numbers in this way… if what we expect happens and America becomes a supporter of peace, Europe will not be able to remain a supporter of war, – Orbán said.

The Prime Minister also said that Ukraine would be one of the main items on the agenda of the meeting of European leaders in Budapest next week. This includes a meeting of the European Political Community and a more informal meeting of EU leaders.

Europe cannot bear the burden (of war – ed.) alone, and if the Americans move to peace, we will also have to adapt, and this is what we will discuss in Budapest, –  the Hungarian prime minister said.

According to Reuters, Europe is concerned about how the outcome of the US election will affect the war in Ukraine and the security of the continent.
