The pro-European incumbent President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has won this year’s presidential election, Babel reports.
This became known from the calculations of the Central Election Commission.
According to 99.59% of the ballots, Sandu won 55.26% of the vote. Her rival, former Prosecutor General Alexandru Stoianoglo, who is supported by pro-Russian opposition parties, received 44.74%. Sandu’s advantage over Stoianoglo is over 176 thousand votes.
It is known that Sandu’s opponent initially held the lead, but it decreased as votes were counted in large cities and abroad, where the incumbent president has more support.
Moldova, you have won! Today, dear Moldovans, you have taught a lesson in democracy worthy of being written about in history books. Today you have saved Moldova! No one lost in our choice of a decent future, – Sandu said.
For his part, Stoianoglo said that “democracy is first and foremost maturity before results” and called for stability and conflict resolution in the country.
The Central Election Commission reported that voter turnout exceeded 54%, which is higher than in the first round and also higher than in the second round of the 2020 presidential election.
