Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Brussels and Kyiv have effectively “declared war” on Budapest. The prime minister’s reaction came after Politico published an article about the possibility of Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU and ways to bypass Hungary’s veto.

Viktor Orban shared this statement on his X account.
Statement details
Orban called Politico the “official mouthpiece of the Brussels elite.” He described the published proposals as “the newest war plan.” He claims the initiative ignores the will of the Hungarian people and aims to remove the current government by any means.
The prime minister said that the EU and Ukraine allegedly want to bring the opposition party “Tysa” to power. The supposed goal is to eliminate Hungarian resistance and involve the country in external conflicts.
Orban urged Hungarians to stop these plans in the April elections. He also called his party, Fides, the only guarantor of Hungary’s sovereignty.
Cause of the conflict
Tensions arose over discussions in the EU about a plan for partial Ukrainian membership as early as 2027. According to Politico, the scenario envisions Ukraine joining “in advance,” without completing all standard reforms and procedures.
This concept is called “reverse enlargement” – the country gains member status at the start of its reform path, not at the end, when all criteria are met.
Earlier, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that Ukraine’s accelerated EU accession from January 1, 2027, is allegedly a key point in a peace plan to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also stated that Kyiv is technically ready to open all EU accession clusters in the first half of 2026. He added that he considers full membership in 2027 as part of future security guarantees.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also confirmed that EU leaders received a confidential European Commission document at an informal summit, which foresees Ukraine’s membership by 2027. He also promised to block its accession for 100 years.
Context
Orban has previously opposed Ukraine’s EU integration and accused Kyiv of interfering in Hungary’s internal politics. At the end of 2025, he initiated a national petition against financial aid to Ukraine and urged defending national interests in elections.
Orban is known for his close ties with Russia and has visited Moscow three times since the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, most recently in November 2025.
Previously, The Ukrainian Review wrote about possible scenarios for Ukraine’s EU accession and what to expect. According to the most optimistic scenario, Ukraine could join the European Union by 2030.
