Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban claimed that Ukraine poses an alleged “threat” to Hungary’s energy system. He ordered the military to guard energy infrastructure facilities. He announced the decision after a meeting of Hungary’s Defense Council and said the measures aim to prevent potential attacks and protect the country’s energy network.

Hungarian outlet HVG reported this.
Orban Announces Military Protection of Hungary’s Energy Facilities
Orban said Ukraine allegedly “plans new actions” against Hungary’s energy system. He linked this claim to the halt of Russian oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline. He instructed authorities to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure.
The Hungarian prime minister said the military will deploy near energy facilities. Police will patrol power plants, distribution points, and dispatch centers.
Orban also said he ordered a ban on drone flights in border areas with Ukraine to prevent potential incidents. He stressed that these measures aim to guarantee the security of Hungary’s energy system.
Context
On January 27, 2026, Russian forces struck a section of the Druzhba pipeline in Lviv region. The attack halted oil transit through the pipeline in late January. As a result, several EU countries lost oil supplies.
Hungary accused Ukraine of blocking the restoration of Russian oil supplies to Hungary for political reasons. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said no technical obstacles prevent the resumption of transit.
He also confirmed that Budapest will continue to block the EU’s 20th sanctions package against Russia and a €90 billion loan for Ukraine. He accused Ukraine of pursuing a “hostile policy” toward Hungary.
Hungarian leadership made these statements ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for April 2026. According to polls, the opposition Tisza party currently leads Orban’s political force. Energy security and relations with Ukraine have become key issues in Hungary’s domestic politics.
Earlier, The Ukrainian Review reported that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said he will stop energy aid to Ukraine unless it restores oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline.
