NATO summit communiqué to describe Ukraine’s path to joining the Alliance as “irreversible” – CNN

The draft joint communiqué of the NATO summit will describe Ukraine’s path to joining the Alliance as “irreversible.”

CNN writes about this, citing three unnamed sources familiar with the matter, Hromadske reports.

The publication notes that the question of how strong guarantees to give Ukraine regarding its future membership in NATO has become a key source of discussion among all members of the Alliance.

CNN also writes that the draft of the final communiqué may change, but the wording about the “irreversibility” of Ukraine’s accession to NATO will be an important signal for Kyiv and Moscow.

One of the unnamed American officials said that the White House supports the use of this word in the final communiqué. But only if the document also reaffirms that Ukraine must continue to work on democratic reforms.

Last Friday, another US official said that the Alliance would make “important new announcements on how we are increasing NATO’s military, political and financial support for Ukraine” as part of Ukraine’s “bridge to NATO”.

NATO Summit

The NATO summit in Washington will last from July 9 to 11. The New York Times, citing unnamed NATO officials, wrote that Ukraine will not receive the desired official invitation, but that member states want to demonstrate in other ways that they support Kyiv “for the long term”.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg outlined three key topics to be discussed at the Washington summit: deterrence and defense, support for Ukraine, and global partnership.
