The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reports that it has appealed to the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to join the humanitarian response in the areas of the Kursk region of Russia that are under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Radiosvoboda informs.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Ukraine “strictly adheres” to its international obligations in the field of international humanitarian law, in particular, to protect civilians during hostilities in the Kursk region.

From the very first days of the Kursk operation, the Ukrainian Defense Forces, as a civilized European army, have demonstrated high professionalism and full compliance with the principles of international humanitarian law. Civilians in the Kursk region have received and continue to receive humanitarian aid, basic humanitarian needs, and the opportunity to leave the combat areas. Taking into account the humanitarian situation and the need to properly ensure fundamental human rights in the Kursk region, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine appealed to the UN to join the humanitarian response in the said territory and sent a note to the UN, – the statement said.

In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that the note was sent to the International Committee of the Red Cross with a request to also join the humanitarian response and monitor compliance with the principles of international humanitarian law, in accordance with the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War of 1949.

The ministry noted that “Ukraine confirms its strict adherence to its international obligations in these areas and is ready to provide full assistance to the activities of the UN and ICRC staff in these territories”.
