New Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has invited Russian leader Vladimir Putin to her inauguration on October 1, Suspilne informs.

This was reported by the Mexican newspaper El Universal.

Claudia Sheinbaum’s team, in coordination with Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente, began sending invitations to presidents of different countries to Sheinbaum’s inauguration.

One of the official invitations went to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which was sent to him through the Mexican Embassy in Russia.  Sheinbaum also said that Peru and Ecuador would not be invited to her inauguration.

Russia’s invitation to participate in President Sheinbaum’s inauguration was sent to President Putin. The Russian president will decide whether he will take part in the ceremony himself or appoint another high-ranking official to do so on his behalf, – the Mexican diplomat said.

At the same time, Mexico falls under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which issued an arrest warrant for Putin. Mexico signed the Rome Statute in 2005.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry later told Reuters that the government had sent invitations to all countries with which it has international relations, as well as international organizations of which Mexico is a member.
