Macron announces dissolution of parliament after losing European Parliament elections

10.06.2024

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that he is dissolving the country’s parliament, the National Assembly, and calling new elections.

This was reported by Le Figaro and BFMTV, according to Hromadske.

On June 30, the first round of parliamentary elections will be held, and the second round on July 7.

“I have decided to give you back the choice of your parliamentary future. This is a serious, difficult decision, but above all, it is an act of trust”, — Macron said.

He made this decision against the backdrop of the European Parliament elections. According to exit polls from the Ifop Institute, cited by Le Figaro, the far-right party of pro-Russian Marine Le Pen, the National Rally, won in France. At the same time, Macron’s party, the National Revival, came in second.

“French people, you had to vote today in these European elections. The main lesson is clear: this is a bad result for the parties that defend Europe”, — the French president said in response to the election results.

Before that, Jordan Bardella, president of the National Rally party, which won the election, called on Macron to dissolve the parliament: “The president cannot remain deaf to the message sent by the French: we ask him to take this new political situation into account, to return to the French people and organize new parliamentary elections.”

As a reminder, European Parliament elections were held in the EU on June 6-9. They were supposed to elect 720 deputies.

Back in January, an independent think tank, the European Council on Foreign Relations, predicted  that many European societies were experiencing a “shift to the right” in their political views. This is why right-wing populists may receive the most support in this year’s European Parliament elections.
